“Beyond Belief” by The Turnback @TheTurnback

[ Genres: Power Pop / Rock / Alternative ]
As far as origin stories go, Canadian rock three-piece The Turnback’s is as good as any. The two founding members, Todd Giglio and Chris Springer, met in college while pursuing careers in acting. Years later, in their forties, the pair produced a film following the endeavor of two characters (also in their forties) attempting to launch a successful rock band. This led to the formation of an actual band followed by the production of an actual album: fast, punchy, guitar-driven stuff that sounds something like the Beatles meets the Beach Boys meets Blink -182. For an act that got its start creating a soundtrack for an essentially fictitious band, there’s no sense of sloppy artifice: everything the band has put out is meticulously produced, masterfully written, and sharply realized.

“Beyond Belief,” a number off their Drawn in Chalk album, opens with a short skit, presumably from the film: two men, ostensibly the band members, discuss getting signed. “It’s going to be hard,” opines one. “What,” comes the reply, “because we’re old? In our forties?” From there the track segues into a jangling guitar intro. The implicit message is clear: age aside, these are two dudes who know their musical business and have the technical know-how to back it up. Viewed in that light, the song that follows is both impressive and disappointing. Impressive in the sense that it really is a fine song, with precise, accomplished songwriting and tight performances. It feels like an amalgam of Beach Boys and Beatles classic sounds, glossed over with 90’s era pop sensibilities. The disappointment comes from the fact that, good as it is, it doesn’t have all that much personality. For two guys who’ve been around this long, with the sort of creativity that birthed a band through the process of making a film, you’d hope the music would be not quite like anything else; an imprint of their unique personalities. Instead you get clean, processed, sounds-like-a-lot-of-other-bands light rock. Which really isn’t all that bad–it’s so well done here that you’ll be foot tapping, chord humming, and lyric mumbling in no time.

Whatever else their music is (or isn’t), The Turnback craft tunes that are enjoyable to listen to. There’s no deep listening needed here, no requisite critical scrutiny before the more intricate workings of their craftsmanship reveal themselves. This is summer music: light, fun, upbeat; perfect to get you from here to there on your daily commute. Even if nothing stands out, there’s no reason to pass up giving the band a few spins.
