We all know love can be a burden, and this also rings true with Kris Rodgers as he croons with power similar to vocals of The Black Keys. The Portland prodigy is no amateur; he tours all over the globe with the Kurt Baker Band while his Berklee College of Music diploma hangs proud. To add to his impressive resume, Rodgers has also provided tunes for both Hollywood films and trailers in addition to independent films.

Focusing on one particular track, “Burden on Me,” there is no lack of soul in this confessional song. The intro hits hard as his voice croaks in right away; I found this to be a pleasant surprise as most artists have instrumental intros. Speaking of instrumentals, those accompanying Rodgers compliment his tone and volume quite well. The focus lies more heavily on his voice, as it should, but the musical portion is present enough to ensure it doesn’t sound too a cappella. I find the lyrics to be quirky and relatable, not to mention catchy. I’ve had the beginning line stuck in my head since the first time I pressed play. Luckily for Rodgers, this song can appeal to listeners with various music tastes; “Burden on Me” falls in the Alternative/Blues/Pop spectrum, which is broad.
If it wasn’t obvious by now, I personally enjoy this song; it’s upbeat yet doesn’t tread into cheesy waters. I find myself singing along as I re-listen. His voice is unique and soothing as it rings with honesty. I’d confidently give this track and the artist overall an impressive 4.5 out of 5. Kris Rodgers has talent that more people should be exposed to.
